Podcast Review: Twenty Thousand Hertz
“The stories behind the world’s most recognisable and interesting sounds”
Twenty Thousand Hertz takes its name from the highest possible sound that any human can hear. And thankfully this is not just a show for you to see how damaged your ears are from all those gigs or drum lessons or hours on the rifle range. Though it does tackle hearing loss in one episode, other subjects include the making of Siri’s voice, forensic audio investigation, techniques used by voice actors, and movie screams.
And for me this is a total geek out. And being a pro podcaster, broadcaster and DJ, audio has been a major factor in my work and social life. Also from an audio point of view this is a beautiful listen… That’s no surprise given the people that make it. Defacto Sound produce audio for movies, video games and commercials, and host Dallas Taylor is their creative director. Effectively, this is a very clever branded podcast. And the topic of interest, is the area of expertise of the programme makers, and so serves as a great advert for who they are and what they do.
And it’s not just the quality of sound also the slick way it’s put together, and the thought that goes into each part of the broadcast. My favourite part is often where they use audio to demonstrate the point, Using their skills to illustrate their words and ideas… Seems like something which is criminally overlooked. The presenting from Dallas is very relaxed and engaging too, with great forward sells at the end. These are a great example for anybody wanting to make the most of their podcast audience.
There’s a few inspirational lessons that can be taken… Firstly – do a podcast about what you know, what you’re passionate about, and what you want to learn more about. In doing this, Twenty Thousand Hertz has created an informed, inquisitive and engaging listen, which works for both the casual listener, and the audio geek that I am.
And, secondly if you’re a business, your can do so much more to sell your expertise and knowledge than just a 30 second advert and fancy jingle. Think outside the box, stand out from the crowd and make an impact.
