Podcast Review Grief Cast: Jordy listens to Grief cast [Guest Blog]

This weeks our podcast review comes in the form of a guest blog from our very own Get Happy presenter known as Jordy! So, we hand over the reigns to her…

I love comedian chat.  There’s something about peeking behind the curtain of the comedian’s mind and into the murky depths beyond that is fascinating. The podcast world is brimming with them, Richard Herring’s Leicester Square Theatre, Adam Buxton, The comedian’s comedian podcast…Cariad Lloyd however, has brought something entirely new and remarkable to the table.  Step forward Griefcast.

You might know Cariad from a myriad of TV shows.  Murder In Successville, Have I Got News For You and Peep Show to name a few. Lloyds father died when she was just fifteen and in Griefcast; Cariad interviews comedians about their own experiences of losing somebody close.  In Cariad’s own words ‘It’s bleak, but you’ll laugh as well. Which for me, is a perfect night in.’

And laugh you will – although I’ve shed more than my fair share of tears too.  Cariad conducts the interviews so personally it sometimes feels like eavesdropping on a private conversation.

The first episode features Adam Buxton talking openly about the loss of his father and I’m not ashamed to say I bawled my eyes out. Katie Wix discusses the myriad of complex emotions behind the loss of her closest friend and the Mac twins have a particularly moving episode about experiencing a loss as a sibling. The talks are interwoven with Cariads reflections and anecdotes of her own experiences which can induce anything between belly laughter to the bottom lip quivers.

One story that I just can’t forget mentions Cariad’s first Edinburgh show. She played a teenage magician who was always shouting ‘DAD!’ offstage as her character patiently waited for him to come in from the other room to help her with a trick.  Listening to her piece together the subconscious reasons for this is particularly heart wrenching.  Griefcast really is a great podcast, just don’t listen to it without a hefty packet of tissues.

Thanks to Jordy for this excellent recommendation and guest blog, upon reading this we have made it our WWALT and gone away to check out Griefcast (https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/griefcast/id1178572854?mt=2). When listening we couldn’t help but feel that this was a masterclass in connecting with your guests and on how to get a true story out of someone. For any podcaster that is looking to draw out stories through interviews, this podcast is a good place to begin.
